A Patchwork of Everyday Resistance

Brown Bag Session

Date: 12:30 | 06-10-2026

Location: Pantry 19th Floor Erasmus Building

As a part of the energy transition, social housing associations (SHAs) increasingly introduce technologies such as heat pumps, ventilation systems, energy displays, and data-driven monitoring devices into tenants homes, often with limited scope for tenant choice. Research shows that resistance can be an outcome of the introduction of such technologies. In this paper we unpack resistance in the context of domestic life and the energy transition. We show how resistance is not only an outcome but rather an entangled part of everyday engagements with domestic energy technologies (DETs). Through extensive qualitative fieldwork conducted by an interdisciplinary team, we show tenants resist domestic energy technologies through subtle, informal, and often nonconfrontational practices. Everyday resistance negotiates, accommodates, and potentially undermines a top-down energy transition and conventions around tenancy and ownership. By emphasizing the material and social  relations that DETs become embedded in, we unpack the dynamics of everyday resistance. From there a pragmatic approach emerges that at leverages everyday resistance as a point of departure for the design and implementation of DETs.
